Effortless Archiving: How to Configure Geyser Data as an Archive Tier for Veeam

In the ever-evolving landscape of data management, efficient and secure data archiving is paramount. Geyser Data's Tape-as-a-Service (TaaS) offers a robust and cost-effective solution for long-term data storage. Integrating this solution with Veeam Backup & Replication provides enhanced data protection, security, and scalability. This blog will guide you through configuring Veeam to use Geyser Data as an archive tier, leveraging Glacier APIs for SpectraLogic.

Why Use Geyser Data with Veeam?

Geyser Data's TaaS offers several benefits:

  • Cost Efficiency: Lower storage costs compared to traditional cloud solutions.

  • Data Durability: Long lifespan of tape media ensures data longevity.

  • Enhanced Security: Air-gapped storage protects against ransomware and cyber threats.

  • Scalability: Easily scale storage needs without significant capital investments.

Before you begin, ensure you have:

  • A functioning Veeam Backup & Replication setup.

  • Access to the Geyser Data web console.

  • Necessary credentials for accessing the Geyser Data APIs.

Step-by-Step Guide to Configuring Veeam with Geyser Data

Step 1: Setting Up Geyser Data
  1. Create a Cloud Tape Library (CTL):

  • Log in to the Geyser Data web console.

  • Navigate to the "Create Cloud Tape Library" screen.

  • Select the data center for your new tape library, provide a name, and specify the storage capacity in TBs or the number of tape cartridges.

  • Choose data protection options (single copy or mirrored), encryption, and compression if needed.

  • Optionally, link the CTL to an AWS S3 bucket.

  • Click the button to create the tape library. The system will allocate the required number of cartridges and provide a URL for accessing the library via S3/Glacier APIs.

Step 2: Configuring Veeam to Use Geyser Data
  1. Open Veeam Backup & Replication Console:

  • Launch the Veeam Backup & Replication console on your server.

  1. Add a New Object Storage Repository:

  • Navigate to "Backup Infrastructure" and select "Add Repository."

  • Choose "Object Storage" and then select "Amazon S3" or "S3 Compatible," depending on your setup.

  • Enter the endpoint URL provided by Geyser Data for your Cloud Tape Library. This URL will point to the S3-compatible interface.

  1. Configure Access Credentials:

  • Input the access key and secret key obtained from the Geyser Data web console.

  • Complete the repository setup by following the prompts, ensuring that Veeam can communicate with the Geyser Data repository.

  1. Configure Glacier APIs or SpectraLogic:

  • If using Glacier APIs, ensure that the configuration aligns with Veeam's documentation for Glacier-compatible storage.

  • For SpectraLogic, follow the specific setup instructions provided by SpectraLogic to integrate with Veeam.

Step 3: Creating Backup Jobs
  1. Create or Modify Backup Jobs:

  • In the Veeam console, create a new backup job or modify an existing one.

  • Select the newly added Geyser Data repository as the target for the archive tier.

  1. Configure Backup Settings:

  • Set your desired schedule, retention policies, and any other necessary options.

  • Save the job settings and start the backup job to begin sending data to the Geyser Data cloud tape library.

Step 4: Monitoring and Managing Backups
  1. Monitor Job Status:

  • Use the Veeam console to monitor the status of your backup jobs.

  • Ensure that data is being successfully transferred to the Geyser Data repository.

  1. Manage Data in Geyser Data Console:

  • Log in to the Geyser Data web console to manage and monitor your cloud tape library.

  • View usage statistics, performance metrics, and security alerts to ensure the health of your archived data.

Benefits of Using Geyser Data with Veeam

  1. Cost Savings:

  • Significantly lower storage costs compared to traditional cloud solutions, making it ideal for long-term data retention.

  1. Security:

  • Air-gapped tape storage provides an extra layer of security against cyber threats.

  1. Scalability:

  • Easily scale your storage as your data grows without large upfront investments.

  1. Environmental Benefits:
