Regulation, resiliency and AI usher in a new era of data protection
Who said backup was boring? A combination of factors is thrusting data protection-related considerations into the heart of IT decision-making. They include the ongoing ransomware epidemic; the potential to use secondary data to train AI models; the need to protect data across emerging uses, such as SaaS and hybrid cloud; and new digital infrastructure resiliency regulations, such as the Digital Operational Resilience Act.
In response to the fast-evolving opportunity, erstwhile backup providers are reorganizing and reinventing themselves, most notably through Cohesity's acquisition of venerable data protection giant Veritas. The likes of Rubrik, Veeam and Commvault have also made significant new product announcements this year.
A new generation of startup specialists is emerging as well, focusing on everything from immutable storage for Veeam backups -- Object First -- to the industry's first "tape as a service" offering, Geyser Data. This segment has arguably never been more relevant or dynamic, all of which is great news for IT decision-makers looking to equip their organizations for a new era of data resiliency.
