Storage Newsletter: Spectra Logic and Geyser Data Partner to Launch Tape-as-a-Service Offering with Tape

Spectra Logic and Geyser Data have partnered to launch TAPAS, short for Tape Archive Platform As-a-Service, introducing a modern Tape-as-a-Service model for enterprise backup and archive workloads. TAPAS combines Spectra Logic’s Cube tape libraries, LTO-9 media, and BlackPearl S3-compatible gateway with Geyser Data’s software for provisioning, management, monitoring, and billing.

Delivered as a subscription-based service and hosted off-premises in secure datacenters, TAPAS removes the need for customers to own or manage tape infrastructure while retaining the durability, security, and cost advantages of tape. The platform supports S3 and Glacier-compatible workflows, fast data retrieval measured in seconds or minutes, and eliminates access and egress fees common with hyperscale cloud archives.

TAPAS uses dedicated tape cartridges per customer, provides customer-controlled encryption keys, and enables true physical air-gap protection. Target use cases include organizations seeking lower-cost cloud archive alternatives and on-premises tape users looking to extend or migrate archives to the cloud.
